Kempston Controls Manufacturing

About Us

From Chicago in 1892, to Holyhead in 2022

In 2021, Kempston Controls Manufacturing acquired the rights to the Cutler-Hammer Cranes business (formally known as Bedford & Eaton Cranes) with the aims of continuing and building upon the legacy of providing high-quality dependable industrial crane control products.

With a wide range of industrial crane parts available, we can supply specialist Heavy-Duty DC contactors, brakes, limit switches and more. Our range of products are typically fitted to large “Bridge” Electrical Overhead Travelling Cranes (EOTC) rated from 5 to 500 tonne.

These crane control components were first manufactured in the 1960s and 70s for the world-wide market and today they have been refined to be more effective and reliable than before. Each crane part is hand made in the UK to order and can be supplied globally. On average, our Cutler-Hammer Compatible crane machinery components can save companies tens of thousands of pounds.

History of Cutler-Hammer Cranes

Established in Chicago in 1892, by Harry Henderson Cutler and Edward West Hammer, Cutler-Hammer quickly relocated to Milwaukee in 1899 to become one of the city’s leading businesses. As the use of electricity gathered pace Cutler-Hammer capitalised on this by developing numerous electrical control devices that were used in everything from battleships and industrial cranes to lighting.

Throughout the 1900s the company continued to innovate and diversify its product range, developing automatic motor starters, lift controls, dimmers for theatres, and heavy-duty industrial magnetic lifting devices.

Post War Expansion
The 2nd World War proved to be a boon for Cutler-Hammer, which led to them manufacturing military goods and control devices for every branch of the American military.

In the decades that followed they tapped into the commercial use of electronics in the rapidly expanding airline and space industries and gained numerous footholds in Europe for exporting electronic technology.

Over time, the company grew to include fifty-four plants around the world and was ultimately purchased by the Eaton Corporation in 1979 during their expansion.

Today & The Future
In 2021 Kempston Controls acquired the rights and the manufacturing facilities for a wide range of industrial crane parts from the Cutler-Hammer Cranes Division from Eaton. Under the Kempston Controls Manufacturing brand our aim is continuing and building upon the Cutler-Hammer legacy of providing high-quality dependable crane machinery components for generations to come.
